I hope that you are well and that you have managed to stay safe during these truly horrible times. We have all been patiently waiting for the easing of restrictions which will again allow us to race offshore, safely and considerately. 

It has been a long time coming - but here we are - the first race in the MUSTO ISORA 2021 Series will be sailed on Saturday 1st May - in Wales - as part of the Plas Heli sponsored Musto ISORA Coastal Series in the UK.

The published Notice of Race has already been amended with the two races on 17th April being postponed and the Night Race in Ireland postponed to a date to be announced.

Race No. 4 on Saturday is now a coastal day race from and to Pwllheli with the start gun at 10.00hrs. The ISORA fleet will sail in the delightful and scenic Cardigan Bay taking in the rugged coastline on the Llyn. The race will be set to bring the crews ashore to enjoy the outside hospitality at Plas Heli the Welsh National Sailing Academy and Event Centre.

Racing will be in accordance with our Protocol with crew limited to 80% of the IRC crew number and this race will be tracked using a new AIS system!

The course will be set to limit risk and will be published on the ISORA web site home page and the SSIs here

Competitors will take special care on exiting and entering the harbour due to the on-going harbour mouth and channel dredging operations.

‍The announcement today, in Ireland, is setting the pathway back to racing while racing may not be permitted until 2nd June, ISORA will be running training events, starting on the 15th May. These events will allow boats to train for the D2D race on the 9th June.

A schedule and online entry will be available shortly and we will publish instructions and updates as soon as possible in the meantime keep an eye on our web site for updates.

Flags are at Half Mast - Wicklow Sailing Club President Sadie Phelan

The following is the sad announcement made by Wicklow Sailing Club - marking the passing of a great friend to ISORA - Sadie.

'It is with great regret that we heard that Sadie Phelan passed away today 27th April, following a short illness. She was an active and supportive member of Wicklow Sailing Club for over forty years.  

Sadie held several roles in the club. In 2010, the 60th anniversary of the Club’s foundation, she was elected the first ever Lady President. She served for two terms. 

She was a hard-working Honorary Club Secretary for many years. She was also the club’s representative on ISORA and due to her strong contacts in that group, the club hosted many ISORA race finishes. These were hugely beneficial to the club in both economic and reputational terms. 

In addition, Sadie coordinated for many years the celebratory dinner and Prize Giving evening for the biennial Round Ireland Yacht Race, another event which greatly enhanced the club on a regular basis. Indeed, Sadie was friends with many of the regular Round Ireland race competitors.

Sadie loved Wicklow Sailing Club. She enjoyed meeting people there and was often a key figure in successful social and fund-raising events. In particular, she was renowned for her wonderful cheese and wine evenings!

Sadie’s passing is a great loss. We would like to extend our sympathy to Paul, to Lisa and Alan and their partners, to her sister Joan, to her grandchildren, to Theo and Orlagh, and to all her extended family.

In honour of Sadie’s dedication to the Club, our flag will fly at half-mast. May she rest in peace.'

‍'NOTICE OF RACE and General sailing instructions - 2021'

The 'Notice of Race and General Sailing Instructions' for the Musto ISORA 2021 Race series is now published - see it on the web site here

The 'Notice of Race and General Sailing Instructions' sets out the rules for our racing, Offshore and also the two Coastal Series.

In addition to the general rules, it also sets out the programme of races and these are summarised below:

Race Programme  2021

Six Offshore (Qualifying Q1-6) Races, best five to count for the Championship title and the prestigious Wolf's Head Trophy

We also have two Coastal Series: 

• Viking Marine Irish Coastal Series - Five races best four to count (IC1-5 green)

• Plas Heli Welsh/UK Coastal Series - Five races best four to count (WC1-5 red)

The 2021 series has a total of 16 Races and these are set out below

1        Races 1 - Postpone - the Irish Coastal Races on 17th April - date for rearranged race to be advised.

2        Races 2 - Postpone - the Welsh Coastal Races on 17th April - date for rearranged race to be advised.

3       Races 3 - Postpone - Irish Night Race on 1st May - date for rearranged race to be advised.

4       Races 4 - Amendment - Change Welsh Night Race on 1st May to a Day race (This will be the first ISORA Race of 2021).

 'Supplemetal Sailing Instructions' (SSIs).

For every Race, we will publish ' Supplemental Sailing Instructions' (SSIs). This will give race specific instructions and must be read by all skippers.

The SSIs can be accessed from the web site from a number of different directions

• From the Notice of Race just click on the SSIs link 
• From the web site > Notice Board> Race Supplemental Sailing Instructions and the choose the race 
• From the 2021 Calendar. Select the race on the relevant date and follow the link to the SSIs

We will always publish the SSIs on the home page of the web site before the race, along with the course for that race.

 Watch out for the 2021 ISORA Race Programme Amendments when the regulations become clearer. 

‍ISORA (Irish Sea Offshore Racing Association) is a not-for-profit members organisation responsible for offshore racing in the Irish Sea.

The Association is run by volunteers for the benefit of competitors by working in partnership with boat owners, crew, yacht and sailing clubs, other associations, and the governing bodies for boating in Ireland, Wales and the UK.
